Catfish

I though the movie “Catfish” was somewhat of a bizarre movie. The only thing that I could think about when watching this movie was all of the online relationships with people that I had throughout high school. To this day I have friendships with people that I have never met in person. I have skyped with them so I assume that are actual people, but watching this movie did cause me to doubt some of these “friendships”. It astounded me that someone would go through such as effort that Angela went through to be somebody that they are not. While watching the movie I could not help but feel bad for Angela. She was desperately trying to escape reality and in doing so she hurt someone that was incredibly nice to her. 

     I believe that this movie future shows that media specifically social media is taking over many peoples lives. Some people, like Angela, are so amerced in these social media sites that they sometimes even forget who they are. As many have us know social media sites can become addicting and Angela found out it can lead to hurting those you care about. I don’t believe that Angela wanted to hurt Nev and she probably hated herself for deceiving him but it her will to be someone else that drove her to mislead him.

     Since the emergence of Web 2.0 I am sure that this was not the first case similar to this where lies are made up and people are deceived over facebook, twitter, or even myspace. Back when myspace was popular I would sometimes get a friend request from someone that was very suspicious and whose profile looked forged. I have not encountered nearly as many since joining facebook, but I am sure they exist. I try to be careful to not accept a request on facebook unless it is from a person that I already know. I do not want to end up like Nev and be deceived so much by someone. In essence one could say that this is exactly the type of thing that Andrew Keen is trying to warn people against.

     Andrew Keen is openly against Web 2.0 and thinks it could bring about the downfall of our generation. These are exactly the incidents that he is trying to warn us about. People can be any number of things with the help of the internet. It is so simple to great a false facebook profile and pretend to be someone that you are not He also talks about how people can take over what professionals do just because they might be good with computers.

     After watching this movie I really know how careful one needs to be when starting up and online friendship with someone body. Often time people are not what they may seem; they could even be completely different person. I now know that I need to be sure that the person is a real person or not some person trying to be something that they are not. I do not want to end up in a situation like Nev and be used in someone’s desire to be something they are not.

Exit Through the Gift Shop

After watching the documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop I have a new found respect for street art and the artists that create it. Before watching this I never really gave street art the respect it deserved nor did I ever really pay attention to it. I never realized how much creativity and skill it required to be a street artist not to mention eluding cops and only being able to work at night or in secluded areas. For the first part of the documentary the focus was on the artistic side of street art and what people must do to be a successful street artist. The filmed clearly depicted the life of a street artist and how they went about doing their work and getting their name out in the public. All the artist display a unique signature that is consistent with all of their art work, whether in Sheppard Fairy’s case of picture of Andrea the Giant or in Invader’s case designs made from Rubik’s cube squares. The second half of the documentary is about a film artist named Thierry Guetta and his quick and in my opinion unrealistic rise to instant stardom. A street artist told him that he should become a street artist himself. He then began to run with this idea, posting cartoon like pictures of himself holding a camera all over Los Angeles. After one large show, along with the help of many promoters and “fellow” street artists, he became an instant celebrity.

            His work however displayed very little or no artistic talent what so ever. Many of his art was the work of graphic designers or other artist that agreed to help him with his show.  In one scene Thierry is seen spray –painting an eye patch on a copy of the Mona Lisa and hanging in on the wall as if it was his own artwork. To me this is not art. This is taking someone else’s work and modifying it slightly and saying that it is your. It is exactly like plagiarism. Their were numerous example of true street art created by some of the greatest street artists in the world such as Banksy, and Invader. One of these pieces was a British telephone booth made to look like it just “murdered”. Invader took the square from a Rubik’s cube and created what look to be little monsters or aliens.

            This obsession of Thierry’s, aka Mister Brainwash, came by filming well know street artists with zero intention of making a documentary. The only reason he followed them is because he loved to film everything. It was this obsession that kindled his new obsession of becoming a street artist and making as much money as possible. One other thing that I found rather shocking was the prices that he was asking for his work. His work was not original, it lacked very little artistic value, but people still bought it and admired him as if he were the greatest in the world.  In a way the name that he choose for himself is the perfect name. He deceived every single street art fan not just in Los Angeles, but also around the world.

            I also found it rather interesting how all of the artists made every effort to preserve their identity. When Banksy would go out he would always have a hood pulled low over his face so you could not see it and even when speaking on camera he would modify his voice. Other artist would have blurred their face. Unlike the others Mister Brainwash enjoy the idea that everybody knew who he was and what he looked like. He enjoy the publicity and attention where as the other artist would rather just hide from the public and be know only by their work and not by their face.

            I feel that Mister Brainwash is the furthest thing for a true street artist. The only part of his work that was original was the picture of himself with his camera. All of his art is not meaningful. It might have a message contained in each one but most of the work that he displays is not his own work. It is somebody else’s work with his own twist. It does not take much artistic talent to add a baseball hat to famous painting. It also takes very little artistic talent to ask someone to build u a giant spray paint can and add a Campbell’s soup label to it. He not only deceived the entire street art world he also created what some people might see as a monster. He has perverted the idea of street art and made it something that it is not. He turned it into all about making money and not so much about the art.

            In the articles that we were given to look at I found it interesting how this documentary could be done the way it was on purpose, and that Theirry does not even exist. I feel if this were true it could possibly serve as a warning to those who wish to become street artist that is not about getting your name out there it is about the work. The first part of the documentary shows you the artistic side of street art and things street artists create. The second half was more about what were to happen if you were to abuse it.

Andrew Keen Questions

1. Andrew Keen views of democratized media are extremely negative. He believes that this particularly type of media as well as web 2.0 are destroying our culture and harming out youth. In order to prove his point he argues that we have no way of knowing who is writing the content on the Internet. We have no way of knowing whether these people re professionals or just some amateurs that only have a vague idea of what they are doing. Keen is also worried about the idea of disintermediation, which is were amateurs are taking over positions of those once held by professionals. For example example professor Jacobsen mention in class when a guy with a Ph D in the field in question was banned from wikipedia because he try to correct them too many times.

2. I believe that Keen and Rushkoff have similar but at the same time different opinions. Keen is completely against technology and the idea of Web 2.0, whereas Rushkoff is not so much against it as he is wary of it. He believes that are lives are become too revolved our the internet and technology. I think Rushkoff is able to at least accept the fact that the internet will always be around and people will continue to use it more and more, but he is not totally against like Keen is. I think Rushkoff's opinion speaks to me more. I like everyone else in our class was most likely born in the beginning of the technology boom that our world has lunched itself into. I am all for technology. I think technology is something that can greatly help us and we should take full advantage of it. I do feel however that we should never let it get to a point where we can't control it. Man should control technology, technology should never control man.

Question 2

Different social media sites have been increasing in the past few years. Without a doubt the largest of these sites is Facebook. According to an article that I read it was not until 1997 that the Internet reached fifty million users in the United States. Between January 2009 to January 2010 Facebook gained over 100 million users. In a sense it is almost scary to think of how fast social media sites are taking over the Internet. I believe that in a way these different sites are allowing people to expand or identities and in a way even be someone that we are not. This can be both good and bad though. Someone can pretend to be a nice beautiful your girl, when they are really a fifty year old pedophile. People can learn more about someone through their facebook page then they could maybe even learn through meeting them in person. I tend to feel that many people can act very differently in person then they do on facebook. Facebook does not allow for certain things such as sarcasms or certain emotions.

     In the same article mentioned earlier I found a list of questions to ask yourself when signing up for the many social media sites out there. Some of these questions included; What am I using this site for? Whose attention am I trying to get?  When signing up for a facebook or a twitter account one must be very careful to think who is going to be seeing my personal information. You personally information is now in the open and people can see it and comment about it. This leads to a lack of not having personal space. So many people will often post what they are doing as their status. For example as status could reading, “Going to the movies tonight” or “Getting drunk tonight with my besties”. The simplest way to keep some of your personally space is to not post statuses such as those I just listed. Personally I will occasionally put up a status that describes what I am doing or maybe how I am feeling, but also I will post a status of maybe a music lyric that I like, or something that made me happy that day.

     I am not trying to say that I do not like facebook and that I do not like my personal information being out there I just don’t like that there is indeed a sense of no privacy. I could post a status and a minute later it could multiple “likes”. I do however believe that some of this “invasion of privacy” is necessary to be able to use these sites and be the media- obsessed race that we have become. I think what many people don’t realize is that lives can be changed a result of these social media websites. As it showed in the video many couples have met over the internet even if it is indeed not facebook it could be something such as World of Warcraft, which is also another huge online game where u can enjoy the fun of a game and socialize with people across the country and the same time. If I had the opportunity to meet my future wife on the internet and meet some of my new best friends on the internet they I would gladly give up some of my personal indentity.
